SoftBank approves remaining $22.5 billion of OpenAI investment, the Information reports
SoftBank has approved the remaining $22.5 billion of its $30 billion investment in OpenAI, according to a report by The Information. This decision is contingent upon OpenAI completing a corporate restructuring that would facilitate a future public offering. The additional funding is part of a larger $41 billion financing round announced in April 2025.
Previously, SoftBank had agreed to invest $10 billion in April, with the remaining $30 billion set for December, conditional on OpenAI transitioning to a for-profit structure by the end of the year. If the restructuring fails, SoftBank's total investment would be reduced to $20 billion.
The funds are intended to support OpenAI's expansion and infrastructure development, including the Stargate project—a joint venture between OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and investment firm MGX. The venture plans to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the United States by 2029.
As of October 2025, OpenAI has reached a $500 billion valuation, reflecting its rapid growth and increased revenue. The company's revenue for the first half of 2025 surpassed its total earnings from the entire previous year by 16%.
